Mansfield business day out

The fourth grade went on a field trip last Friday.
The places we went to were: two cousins pizza, relax it’s just coffee, Main Street books, squirrel’s den, the Richland library and last but not least the Richland bank. We went on this field trip because our new unit is market place and we are learning about the Great Depression. At the Richland library we looked at magazines and news papers from the time of the Great Depression. When we went to relax its just coffee we asked if you had to get a business loan and how long it took to get the business up and running. When we went to the squirrel’s den we asked if they get their resources local.  They said that if they can they will, but if they can’t, they won’t.

We had a great talk with Paul, the owner of Relax. Did you know his espresso machine is the most expensive thing in the shop!  That’s what he makes the most money on as well!  Coffee!
In this room we talk about how to get a business loan and actually got to get a business loan paper!  Xsamari sat in the President’s chair.

In the vault we got to hold a 1000 dollar bill and 50000 dollars in 100 dollar  bills.

  Look at that smile!

The thousand dollar bill is no longer in circulation.

I wonder how Squirel’s eat this much?  The Squirel’s Den was full of yummy things.  The owner, Mrs. Secrist, talked about how she has been living her dream of owning a business for 23 years now.  She encouraged us to follow our dreams no matter how long it took for them to come true.
The chocolate business was very resourceful.  We noticed they re purposed many items to use as chocolate moulds.  This was cool to see.
The squirel’s den has quite a big link with the community and LaDonna loves to do chocolate art of historical buildings.

Our last stop was the Richland Library resource room.  This is named the Sherman Room.  Here, we had a look at lots of primary resources about the Great Depression.  We learned that the great depression affected Mansfield just as much as bigger cities.
We also got to see pictures come alive with the megaletascope.  It looks like an old time photographer when we are hidden under the cloth.
